Dark under eye circles are a problem that many people try to alleviate with home remedies such as cucumber slices or tea bags on their eyes. While these efforts may help to reduce the puffiness that is associated with under eye problems, the dark color that remains is a problem that is related to leaky capillaries and delicate, thin skin found around the eye area.

There are many factors that may cause dark under eye circles. They may form due to genetics or lack of sleep, but the most common factor in under eye circle appearance is the oxidation of hemoglobin found in red blood cells. Hemoglobin is the element found in the red blood cells which gives them their traditional red coloring. The skin under the eyes is very thin, which allows any change in the blood flow to become noticeable. This skin is also more translucent than most of the skin on the body with the capillaries residing very near to the skin’s surface. This translucency also increases with age.

Capillaries are very small blood vessels found in the body, and sometimes blood travels too fast for their narrow diameter. This may lead to some of the blood leaking out and pooling around the eyes. The body has a mechanism for oxidizing the excess blood which consists of enzymes breaking down all parts of red blood cells, including hemoglobin. When hemoglobin is broken down it changes to a blue, almost purple color which becomes visible through the thin layer of skin found around the eye.
