SCIENCE
Honeysuckle is rich in natural phenolic compounds and most notably chlorogenic acid, the ester of caffeic acid and quinic acid. Chlorogenic acid is an important factor in the plant’s metabolism and also works as a powerful antioxidant and protectant. In nutrition it is often taken as a supplement to reduce the release of glucose into the blood stream after a meal. Combing these attributes into a cosmetic active allows for an increase in cell metabolism and microcirculation so leading to a consequent improvement in the condition of our skin.
Chlorogenic acid has shown the ability to induce body fat loss by acting as a PPAR agonist. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are a group of nuclear receptor proteins that function as transcription factors regulating the expression of genes. They also play an essential role in the regulation of cellular differentiation, cellular development and the cellular metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. Chlorogenic acid is capable of producing a greater maximal response than the endogenous agonist of PPARs, and thus increases the desired responsive action from cells. By activating these sites chlorogenic acid increases the transcriptional activity of PPARs which can translate into an increase in the metabolism of lipids within Adipocyte cells. This in turn leads to smoother skin and a less dimpled appearance. Chlorogenic acid has also shown the ability to reduce proliferation of new Adipocytes through its potent antioxidant effects.
