Unlike green tea which is made from mature tea leaves, white tea is made using the tender, uppermost buds and new leaves. Since there is minimal processing, the integrity of the phytochemicals in the leaves is preserved. It is these compounds that [provide potent antioxidant activity to counteract extrinsic damage. Environmental and lifestyle factors such as exposure to UV radiation, air pollution and smoking all contribute to free radical formation which damages our skin at the molecular level. This damage contributes to the formation of wrinkles as well as a decrease in tone.
Tea is one of the most popular beverages consumed today. Derived from Camellia sinensis leaves, the process of making tea is believed to have originated in China more than 5,000 years ago. Camellia sinensis is native to southeastern Asia. It is a small, perennial, evergreen tree that can grow as tall as 40 feet in height. However, cultivated tress are pruned to heights between 2 and 3 feet. Tea leaves are used in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicines as a stimulant, diuretic, cardiotonic and astringent. Studies have shown that drinking tea also helps prevent tooth decay.
The different tea varietals that we’re familiar with are a result of the different processing methods. Black, oolong, green and white tea all contain polyphenolic flavonoid compunds typically referred to as catechins. It is these compounds that deliver teas’ potent antioxidant activity, and it is the white tea variety that has the highest concentrations of catechins.
The priniciple catechins found in white tea are: epicatechin (EC), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). As a result of their antioxidant activity, catechins are understood to protect against DNA damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). EGCG also inhibits ultraviolet (UV) radiation-induced oxidative stress to reduce oxidative damage to cellular DNA, while simultaneously, boosting levels of antioxidant defense enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase.
FSS White Tea Extract PF is useful in both hair and skin care applications. The antioxidants present in white tea are especially suited to anti-aging and anti-wrinkle formulations.
