"Antioxidant. UV protectant. Improves mental capabilities. Protects against cardiovascular disease. Helps prevent cancer and hypertension. Regulates body temperature and blood sugar”. These are some of the health benefits associated with green tea.
Tea is one of the most popular beverages consumed today. Derived from Camellia sinensis leaves, the process of making tea is believed to have originated in China more than 5,000 years ago. Camellia sinensis is native to southeastern Asia. It is a small, perennial, evergreen tree that can grow as tall as 40 feet in height. However, cultivated tress are pruned to heights between 2 and 3 feet. Tea leaves are used in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicines as a stimulant, diuretic, cardiotonic and astringent. Studies have
also shown that drinking tea helps prevent tooth decay. The different tea varietals that we are familiar with are a result of the different processing methods. Black, oolong, green and white tea all contain polyphenolic flavonoid compounds typically referred to as catechins. It is these compounds that deliver teas’ potent antioxidant activity.
The principle catechins found in green tea are: epicatechin, epigallocatechin, epicatechin gallate, and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). These polyphenols act as ROS scavengers to prevent damage caused by the superoxide anion, as well as hydroxyl and peroxyl radicals. It is understood that this oxidation cases damage that contributes to extrinsic signs of aging. Catechins also have anti-inflammatory properties and may also inhibit bacterial growth in addition to providing astringent activity.
FSS Green Tea Extract SFO can be incorporated into a vast array of personal care products to provide the antioxidant activity associated with the rich polyphenol content of green tea.
