Twinflower (Linnaea borealis) is a woodland plant found in the forests of Scotland and Scandinavia. Twinflower gets its name from its delicately paired bell flowers. It is one of few plant species to be named after Carolus Linnaeus, a famous Swedish botanist, physician, and zoologist. It is said to have been Linnaeus’ favourite plant and he took the flower as his own personal symbol when he was raised to the Swedish nobility in 1757. Of it, Linnaeus said "Linnaea was named by the celebrated Gronovius and is a plant of Lapland, lowly, insignificant, disregarded, flowering but for a brief time - from Linnaeus, who resembles it”. The twinflower has now given its name to the popular Swedish girl’s name Linnéa or Linnea.
In herbal medicine, there are few plants that have had such a wide range of uses as the Twinflower. Tobacco made from chopped Twinflower was supposed to cure skin diseases. The plant was also used to make tea, porridge and compresses. Forbabies who had skin eruptions, a decoction of Twinflower would be added to the bath water. In the Sogn region, the Twinflower was called ‘frismegras’ after the skin disease ‘frisme’ which causes FSScesses and swellings. The Twinflower was alsosupposed to have a healing effect on rheumatism and the mumps.
In Norwegian folk tradition, the Twinflower has a long-standing reputation as a cure for shingles (Herpes zoster). Numerous vernacular names reflect this use; the majorityare dialectal variations of nårisle or nårislegras, literally: ‘corpse rash’, ‘corpse rash grass’. In folk medicine, the Twinflower was also used to treat other kinds of rashes such as eczema, hives, measles, ringworms, scabies, water blisters, rheumatism and finger infections. It was applied either internally, as a decoction, or externally, as an ointment, in compresses or by exposing the patient to smoke.
