BACKGROUND
Cactus water has become a popular sports and health drink to help rehydrate and revive – so much so it is even claimed to help reduce the symptoms of a hangover! Cactus water contains a balance of electrolytes, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants making it a perfect combination for ‘drinking your way’ to fresh faced skin.
The prickly pear cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica) produces an orange or purple fruit, which is commonly eaten in Mexico. Historically, Spanish sailors ate this fruit to prevent scurvy due to its high levels of Vitamin C. Native Americans relied on this fruit as a major food source and for medicinal purposes, such as treating burned and inflamed skin. Today, prickly pear has become a popular super fruit due to its powerful nutrient composition. Prickly pear is rich in vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium and potassium while also containing tannins, flavonoids, betanins and alkaloids. Vitamin A and C are important vitamins that play a role in protecting and repairing the skin while also supporting the production of structural proteins thus supporting the skin’s shape.

Due to the content of tannins, flavonoids, betanins and alkaloids, prickly pear can improve the overall appearance of the skin. The high tannin content of prickly pear can act as a natural astringent, which is great for tightening thus minimizing the appearance of the pores. Betanins are phytochemicals that only a few plants produce to protect themselves by acting as an antioxidant. The flavonoids and alkaloids work synergistically to protect, repair and soothe the skin and hair.
Regulation of water content in the prickly pear is of vital importance due to the arid climate that the plant typically thrives in. This cactus has a high moisture content due to the presence of carbohydrates and sugars, which isolate water to keep the plant hydrated during periods of desiccation. These carbohydrates and sugars move water through the plants system to hydrate and promote repair.
FSS Cactus Water PF provides a bio-water for use in personal care to capitalise on the natural hydration mechanism of the prickly pear plant. Being rich in electrolytes, this water can help to balance and tone the skin, providing a perfect base for refreshing micellar waters, skin essences and toners.
