Scientifically called Citrus bergamia, the bergamot orange is a yellow citrus fruit rich in antioxidants and flavonoids.
The name comes from "Bergamum,” a town in Lombardy, Italy, where the fruit is widely produced. The juice is more bitter than grapefruit, but sweeter than lemons, and is sometimes called a "sweet lemon.” The tree itself is similar to a regular lemon tree, and grows to about nine feet, with long, oval green leaves and white flowers. The fruit is small and round, and turns yellow when ripe.
The uplifting properties of bergamot are widely known; it can be very refreshing and has very relaxing properties. Bergamot has a clean and refreshing citrus fragrance believed to be helpful to calm the mind. It’s commonly used during massage therapy to provide these calming benefits. The soothing properties of the fruit are ideal for calming inflamed skin and its antiseptic properties can help ward off infection and aid recovery. Bergamot can be used in many skin care products to capitalize on its cooling, refreshing nature. FSS Bergamot Extract PF can be incorporated into a variety personal and skin care formulations, and may help cosmetic formulators capitalize on the trend for natural, botanical extracts.
