As the popularity of a vegan life style increases so does the importance of personal care products which are compliant to the vegan choice. Proteins such as collagen and elastin have commonly been used in formulations to provide film-forming, moisturising and anti-ageing properties but are rapidly falling out of favour, as traditional animal derived sources are less and less appealing to the final conscientious consumer.
Collagen and elastin are proteins within the skin that work synergistically to provide an interwoven structure and support. These proteins can start to degenerate as early as age 20, leading to a more visually aged appearance over time.
Elastin is a large fibrous protein that is comprised of spiral filaments that are often compared to springs. These elastin fibers can stretch up to 1.5 times their length and have the ability to snap back to their original shape without deformation. Elastin is primarily composed of amino acids and is essential for our bodies’ framework, allowing tissues to regain their original form. As the skin stretches and relaxes, these amino acids aid in bringing the skin back to its shape. This can be attributed to their interlinking chains, comprised of approximately twenty amino acids; this unique interlinking is ultimately responsible for elastin’s flexibility. These flexible chains allow for the formation of a flexible film on the surface of the skin and hair that enhances suppleness and helps retain moisture. Increases in flexibility leads to less signs of visual aging, and fewer indicators of skin damage.
BENEFITS
Yeast is a single-celled organism that’s classified as a fungus, which makes it vegan friendly! Interestingly, on a cellular level yeast contains many of the same processes as found in human cells. In fact, some strains of yeast have been used as vectors to produce human proteins such as collagen and elastin in culture. Much like the mammalian extracellular matrix, yeast contains a variety of high molecular weight proteins, which provide a rich source of the component amino acids.
The FSS Phytolastin PF has been created by lysing yeast cells, and isolating specific amino acids sequences through the use of molecular sieves. This material is designed to duplicate the aesthetics of mammalian elastin while delivering enhanced levels of moisture to the skin and hair without the associated issues of using an animal product. FSS Phytolastin PF may be formulated as a direct replacement for animal derived elastin giving the desirable benefits of moisturisation and conditioning in a completely vegan form.
